Wandering through through the remains of the Nova Festival site in Re’im, I was struck by a sense of numbness within myself and the people around me. No one knew how to process what we were looking at—the whole event is just too hard to understand. Right at sunset before leaving, I stumbled on this little scene of quiet poetry that moved me: the juxtaposition of a peaceful field against the reality of what happened. As Jews, we know trees as a symbol of life and our peoplehood. To see such a strong tree rising up from the literal ashes of a massacre reflected our resilience.
