Havurah Connects: Artist and Schmooze – Alex Woz and Avraham Vofsi
Be apart of the next installment of Havurah Connects, our select series of intimate events.
Join Havurah for an insightful discussion between Alex Woz and Avraham Vofsi, two dynamic Jewish artists whose work explores the intersection of Jewish identity and visual art. They’ll delve into the themes of their work, the journey of Jewish identity across visual practices, and the deeply personal nature of art making.
Alex Woz is a 26 year old Argentinian Jewish artist who uses diverse photographs of Jews to paint distinctly stylistic artworks that seek to capture the Jewish experience and foster a sense of Jewish pride and knowledge in the viewer. Going to school in one of the most antisemitic cities in America, Alex connected to his identity through antisemitism at a young age- later going on a journey to flip antisemitic tropes on their heads through art, and to inspire Jews to do the same. Today, he works out of his traveling studio and works with the Langerman Foundation to research the history of antisemitic propaganda art.
Avraham Vofsi is an artist from Australia who now lives in Jerusalem. He's creating a new visual language that shows what it means to be Jewish today. He uses traditional oil painting to make portraits, landscapes, and still-life paintings that tell stories about Jewish life. As an act of reclamation, Vofsi is creating a space for the Jew in the art world - a place that was unavailable to Jews in previous centuries.
